You know you eat tacos a lot when every trip to the grocery store involves grabbing a bunch of (not cheap) fresh cilantro. What if you could lower your grocery bill and grow the fresh stuff yourself in your windowsill? Sounds like it's it's time to get your DIY herb garden up and running, and plant some cilantro! We're here to show you how (spoiler alert: it's easy).
1. Plant your cilantro seeds by scattering a handful of seeds in a pot, filled with organic potting soil. Cover seeds with a light layer of soil on top. Or, just lay down your Herb Seedsheet in a planter box on your balcony or patio, or right on top of your garden bed, and the seeds are already spaced perfectly and covered for you.
2. Water your newly planted seeds, keeping the soil moist by lightly watering/misting every day. Seeds need to be in good contact with moist soil in order to have adequate germination. Cilantro seeds will usually sprout and show their face within the first week, and be large enough to get significant harvests from in around 6 weeks.
Thin plants to about 3-4 sprouts per cluster, with each cluster spaced about 4-6" apart. This way the plants wont be too overcrowded, but you'll get good, dense production.
Cilantro needs full sunlight to grow full and lush, so if it starts growing spindly and leggy, that’s an indicator it needs more sun exposure.
3. Harvest from your cilantro when it is at least 6” tall, using clean scissors to cut an inch or two from the bottom of the stem. Only harvest ⅓ of the total plant at a time, to allow it to grow back and keep producing more foliage. Cilantro likes to be trimmed so don’t be afraid!
