How to (Naturally) Prevent Animals From Eating Your Garden
Small animals like squirrels, mice and birds can be a large nuisance to your garden. Here are a few tips to defend your garden from these crafty predators.
1. Build a Fence
Fence off your garden with chicken wire or mesh that can be found at your local hardware store. For a low cost, you can save your plants from meeting their untimely demise at the hands of our furry friends. If birds are the main culprits, try using a light net that you can drape over your plants. This will deter airborne adversaries.
2. Sprinkle Spice or Vinegar
Another great way to discourage garden pests is to sprinkle cayenne pepper or spray diluted vinegar water around where you plant your seeds. These quick remedies will deter squirrels and other predators due to the compounds in these products. Daffodils, hyacinths and alliums are flowers that squirrels dislike that can be interplanted too.
3. Get a Guard Animal
Simply find an animal that is bigger and scary to the pests but friendly to you. You can even borrow a neighbor’s dog or cat. The presence of a pet can intimidate pests from attempting to invade your sacred garden.
4. Install a Squirrel Feeder
Try sweetening the deal for these pesky critters. Install a squirrel feeder away from your garden to provide another source of food to distract the pests. This will hopefully distract the squirrels or fill them up so they won’t go after your plants.
5. Set Mouse Traps
Mouse traps located around your plants are another good way to deter squirrels from digging up seeds or plants. Just make sure that you remember where they are!
6. Reflective Pinwheels
Place reflective pinwheels like the decorations for the 4th of July or Memorial Day. Rays from the sun with glint off the wheels and the movement will spook squirrels and birds. Plus, you have the fun added bonus of being patriotic!
-If you are really desperate, you can sprinkle urine crystals from coyotes that can be found at your local hardware store around your garden to scare off all kinds of pests.
-If deer are the issue, string fishing line around your garden at different heights. This invisible barrier is sure to fend off our deer friends.
